Cultural Food Review #2: Sushi

Cultural Food Review #2: Sushi

Well, I spoke too soon, here it is cultural food #2. This time, it's sushi.

So from what culture is sushi exactly. I mean, I know it's Asian and I think probably Japanese, but let's check.

Well after 20 seconds of careful internet research it turns out sushi is indeed Japanese. According to http://www.kikkoman-europe.com/e/02/02-02/index.html?main=main.html, "Fish and rice have formed the basis of Japanese cuisine for a long time. Sushi is nothing other than a combination of these two basic ingredients. This sounds very simple considering the great variety behind the concept. Sushi was originally just a method to preserve fish by means of fermentation. Today there is an infinite number of variations."

To try out some sushi, and because I have so many meal blocks I can waste a few, I got a combination of Boston Rolls and Spicy California Rolls from The International Market, the closest thing CMU has to a cafe. I chose the Boston and Spicy California Roll combo because that way I will be able to test and judge the whole breadth of the sushi experience. Plus, I don't know what the hell the stuff is anyway.

First of all I don't know which was which. Was the stuff with the strange orange filling California rolls or Boston Rolls? Neither of the two were really that spicy. In fact they both tasted fairly bland. They did have the WEIRDEST texture. In short, I got through two "California" rolls and one "Boston" roll before I decided enough was enough.

Unfortunately, I lost my internal bet. I thought if Fastow could eat the damn things I certainly could. Well, Steve, you won. I couldn't get eat anymore and ended up throwing the rest of the tray. Thankfully, I had my trusty Peach Snapple nearby to wash it down. That has to be the most dependable and trustworthy drink on the planet.

So here are the points: Sushi and Japan receive 3 strange orange fillings out of 10. Also Peach Snapple gets 10 fact caps out of 10 for keeping my meal in me. Unlike Indian food, sushi looks good, and tastes disgusting.

In the good news though, if I ever take a cute Japanese girl out for sushi, I know what to order.
