Random Game I Like #48: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid 3 is an unusual game for me. I liked the first two Metal Gear Solid games (the ones on Sony consoles). But when I first played MGS3, I was really dissappointed. The jungle and older technology (it's a prequel) kind of made it harder. No longer could I navigate almost exclusively by my motion detector and easily just walk around my opponents. I was getting seen and occasionally killed! What was going on?

After I played more, I realized that was the point. This isn't the sleek, futuristic. Snake you're used to. This is a game of survival espionage, and in this aspect the game succeeds brilliantly. Dodging enemies requires forethought and scouting. Combat is closer and more fierce. You have to catch food and take care of yourself with first aid.

It does all of this and yet it remains a game that captures much of the feel of the other Metal Gear games. The bosses are ridiculous, each with some superpowers and requiring some specific strategy and headscratching to overcome. The story maintains the level of ludicrousness evoked in the other games in the series.

Metal Gear Solid 3 surprised me. See it for yourself.

Comment I don't care if I'm the only one, but I liked MGS 2.

Comment You liked MGS 2? What the hell is wrong with you. There were like 20 minutes of gameplay, and the copious story line was unbearable.

Comment I don't like all that sneaking around. I'm pretty clumsy, even in avatar form. Plus, "Snake Eater" sounds like a euphamism for a fellator. I've felt that way since I first saw the previews.
